Flames/Nucks Liveblog

Thanks once again to the Yahoo! editors who are still struggling with their hockey coverage as noted by the divisional reference below.

19:19 – Kesler is stoned by Kipper in the first minute otherwise that would have been an ideal opening. Mighty Mouse Weaver misses a bomb a few seconds later.

18:40 – Krajicek is back and takes a bomb that glances off Regehr’s skull. Scary but he looks ok.

17:12 – Naslund floats a pass that the Calgary defense messes up and Henrik banks his fifth of the season off the post by Kipper for the lead. Vancouver 1-0.

16:20 – The Canucks are out shooting the Flames 7-0 so far. I fear an awful second period or something is coming, but this start is great.

15:08 – Maybe I don’t need to wait until the second; Aucoin blasts one from the blueline that skirts off Pyatt’s MySpace account and past Luongo for the equalizer. 1-1.

8:58 – Both teams have settled down now and the Flames are skating better now so any hope this game was going to go the way of the Wild one are shot. Could be tied the rest of the way at this rate.

8:51 – Did you know Kesler’s first NHL goal was against the Flames? That’s adorable; everyone say “awwwwww” in unison. In the meantime, Luongo stymies the ever-wily Nolan as the Flames forecheck is keeping Vancouver pinned in their end.

7:30 – Center Ice Online saw fit to kick me off for some reason, so I think I saw Linden crunch a Flame and get two for boarding.

4:04 – Well, no goal so that’s good. Daniel just missed a good chance and there was a pile in front of the net, complete with Naslund pushing Iginla around in the crease. Yeah…that’s an even scrum.

0:45 – Naslund just missed Daniel on a quick rush in front of Kipper. That would have been nice in the final minute.

End of the First – Calgary goes to the locker room with a 12-10 shot lead which should tell you something from how the first few minutes of the game have changed. It’ll be pretty tight going forward.

(Second Period)

19:50 – Well, the period doesn’t start so well with Edler taking a delay of game call. Damn rookies! Flames to the powerplay.

18:20 – …and Krajicek makes it worse by taking a tripping call. Calgary gets the 5-on-3 for about 30 seconds.

15:41 – Center Ice kicks me offline again…and I can’t help but notice that the Flames are back on the man advantage. Sweet…

12:15 – Vancouver has yet to get a shot on goal in the period, yet Luongo is stopping everything in his path.

10:50 – Well, well, well…Mr. Mitchell’s offensive prowess makes a showing and puts the good guys in the lead. 2-1 Vancouver.

5:20 – The Canucks finally get a call in their favor as Sarich takes an interference call.

3:35 – Ritchie came close at the end of the penalty but the Flames kill it off and this game stays tight as ever as the second period comes to a close in a few.

2:45 – Old man Nolan takes a slashing call and puts Vancouver right back on the advantage. Their first one was awful overall so let’s see if they can apply some sustained pressure this time around.

2:38 – Holy crap. The Sedins find each other on and Daniel zips an amazing pass in front of the crease to Naslund and it pops in off his skate. 3-1 Vancouver.

End of the Second – The Canucks will head into the final 20 minutes with a comfortable lead, but that’ll only really be “comfortable” of they don’t come out flat since I’m sure the Flames will come up charged to get back in the game in the third.

(Third Period)

17:10 – Not a bad start to the period, they didn’t come out flat at all which is what I’ve been fearing since the first period.

15:20 – Oh my, we have an Isbister goal. His first as a Canuck I believe. Pyatt and Kesler did the dirty work and Isbister look like he flew out of no where and pounced on the puck in front of the Calgary netminder. 4-1 Canucks.

13:49 – Godard goes to the box and the Canucks get another chance to put this game away and stay perfect against the division.

10:00 – The Flames are starting to pick up their play but they are still playing mainly on the perimeter. Luongo stopped Nolan and Iginla in quick succession.

7:50 – Phaneuf just crushed poor little Burrows during a race for the puck and an icing call.

7:00 – And now Dion takes a hooking call on Ritchie who was damn close to getting a penalty shot call. Ritchie has been a pleasant surprise, his play has been very strong in the past two weeks.

5:00 – Canucks don’t score again on the man advantage, best chance they had was a ricochet puck off a blast from Mitchell on the point.

3:47 – Lost in tonight’s game a bit has been a fantastic game from Luongo. He’s really put a bad October behind him and he’s slowly getting back in that form that drove this team last year.

End of the game: Vancouver 4, Calgary 1

Aftermath – That was an incredibly solid game for the Canucks. They never fell behind and played strong from period to period. Calgary was tired from playing last night and the travel and couldn’t keep up with the puck movement and forecheck of the more rested Canuck squad. Lastly, there’s Luongo who played well and would have had a shutout if the deflection off of Pyatt didn’t ruin it. Not bad at all for a team that is still wrestling with injuries and now three more games without Ohlund, their #1 defenseman.

The win puts the Canucks at 21 points, two back from Colorado and three from Minnesota. They’ll travel to Edmonton on Tuesday and then their big, angry rematch with the Wild on Wednesday. It’s feasible, if their strong play continues, they could be on top of the division by the end of the coming week.
