Happy “kill the blog” birthday!

Aug 6th, 2008 | By Mike | Category: Lead Story, News

So the past few days have been interesting around these parts. I spent a month making a new site (from every CSS angle I could find down to dumb little elements that only I would notice) only to kill it in six months thanks to the fun-filled world of site management, juggling multiples instances of Wordpress and multiple databases too boot. Like watching a one goal lead in the third period of a Vancouver game, something had to give and it was negative.

On the plus side we’re back but I still have a lot to rebuild. I’ll focus more on that for a few days, but wanted to give you all – the faithful readers, commentators, those who mail nail bombs et all – a big hearty thank you as we enter the third year of this ol’ blog.

Some of you guys and gals run your own blogs, some of you read and comment as much as you can, others chime in every now and then and some just come for fun (or, again, the bombs).  Whatever the case and however you came, we like you unconditionally (though reserve the right to disagree with you and mock your family).

Here’s a glove tap to the upcoming season. And for the Canuck-faithful out there…I trust you stocked the liquor cabinet right?

  1. Happy birthday, Yankee! Love the new look. My liquor cabinet is always well stocked.

  2. Welcome back, Yankee Canuck. You were missed.

  3. Love the new look, Mike. CSS is fun, ain’t it? ;)

  4. Site looks good from here in Seattle. Here’s hoping I don’t need as much alcohol as last season.

  5. Alix – Thanks, much appreciated! Once I am done jumping up and down on my server, I will hightail it to the whiskey barn. It feels like a whiskey sort of season no?

Simon – Thanks man! Still have some clean up work to do, but I just wanted to get the framework up and running. More goodness to come shortly.

Rod – CSS was the least of my problems. I learned more about PHP loops in the past week then I care to share!

Birrell – thanks for the compliment…Seattle eh? I’ll be in your city next week. Care to recommend any place I can go in thr 48 hours I am there?

  6. I love the whole setup in general, it may take a while to get used to it, but glad to see it back… and happy birthdy? XD

    It most certainly does!

  8. I love the whole setup in general, it may take a while to get used to it, but glad to see it back…

The basic idea is more magazine-esque reading on the homepage. The tabs across the top will be the main stories and the columns beneath will be split into various categories for easy scanning. It’ll be easier when the new guy starts since, i hope, we’ll have twice the content and need a way to show it all. Plus I like being different.

Don’t worry, it’ll be a snap for a quick lady like yourself!

  9. Nice clean feel as far as visuals go. Only thing I miss is that there seems to be very little in the way of the traditional “Yankee” imagery you threw out there before. But that’s life, I guess…

The news style home page is nice. I tried to do the same thing once with my home page, but I wasn’t able to do up anything nearly as nice as what you’ve got. I never picked your site as one which was “news-paper-like”, but it works very well! :)

  10. The imagery is coming back, probably around the time the season started. I underestimated how much work turning the site around is year to year. I’m usually more in favor of the big splash, but when that didn’t work, I opted to go piece meal instead. We’ll see, everything I do is an experiment anyway!

Talk back and make it dirty
