@Rinslet – yes I wasn’t talking so much about the reality as the perception – when Crosby first went out the reaction from the Pens fanbase was very “the end is nigh” – they weren’t seeing the other good talent around him, because he had become such a focus. They were soon reassured, though, as the Pens stepped up so well that they barely missed the wonderboy at all.

We haven’t actually seen as much negativity from Canuck nation which is fab – I think Sanford’s win against the Wild a couple of days before Lu went down helped a lot in that regard – plus the fact we have been playing a much more offensively impressive game so far this season.

Being in England surrounded by mainly fans of the Eastern Conference teams (presumably because they are the games most Brits can actually stay awake long enough to watch!), I am just fed up of hearing “the Canucks are just Luongo” or “Luongo is wasting his career stuck with the Canucks”. The last two results (mainly) without Lu give me some ammunition to argue back, and for that I am grateful. I hope he gets better soon though!!!

well, i must say, i was pleasantly surprised tonight.

easily a game the canucks could have ‘mailed’ in…. due to extenuating circumstances… just back from crazy travel, news about luongo….

I am looking forward to see what Teh Schneids can bring… expecting a few shaky starts, but will probably do alright eventually as he gets used to the pace. He did win a couple of games in the pre-season against half/half NHL/AHL players.

@Sarah Well, it’s hard to compare the Crosby injury with Luongo, obviously, as the positions are too different. You get 10+ other forwards who can either make up for the points you will lose from Crosby or at least collapse and play a tighter game defensively.

With goalies, there is still a possibility that, even when the team plays the trap 100%, they still let in a goal that a #1 goaltender could have saved.

It doesn’t hurt that Pens have Malkin as well, which is pretty much equal or better in skill to Crosby.

Sarah – You’re right the league may think the team is just Luongo but I also feels that’s a lot of the eastern media who doesn’t see the team. Vancouver is 5th best in GA in the league and that’s why they think that but if you look at goals scored Vancouver is also 5th best in the league, better than the Pens, Habs, Rangers and Flames (Minny is dead last btw). I really think all Sanford/Schneider need to do is make the key saves…if they let in a few that Lui would have stopped, so be it. But bad goals deflate teams and that’s the biggest fear I see now: some terrible shot that goes in and changes the tide of the game forcing Vancouver to come from behind too often.

Also, another point is that if Schneider does well and Luongo comes back, then what does this team do next year in Lui’s last year?

A longer term potential pro, in my mind, is that if we DO do ok without Lu for a month or so (and as you have highlighted above, that’s certainly possible, with a favouring wind), then that would work wonders for team (and fan) confidence. We are already playing with a lot of belief, I think – but you still get that “Vancouver is just Luongo” vibe from around the league, which must rub off a little.

Remember the Pens fans last season getting ready to throw themselves off high buildings when Crosby hurt his ankle and was out for a while? Actually they managed admirably without him, and that really helped their confidence and progress as a team throughout the remainder of the season…
